What you need to know

Microsoft opened a €1m Dream Space hub at its Grange Castle data centre campus on 15 October, aiming to bring STEM and AI skills to students in surrounding Dublin and Kildare communities. The company expects more than 5,000 students to take part in learning sessions at the hub over the next 12 months.

  • Microsoft invested €1m in the hub from a €4m fund set aside in March last year for Skill Up Ireland.
  • More than 5,000 students from Dublin and Kildare schools are expected to attend sessions in the next 12 months.
  • The hub offers a curriculum covering electrical engineering, physical computing and cloud operations, supported by a mini data centre lab.

What the Hub Offers

The Grange Castle facility builds on Dream Space, which Microsoft introduced at its Leopardstown campus in 2018. Since then, more than 550,000 students have taken part in its STEM and AI education sessions, according to the company.

The new hub adds a curriculum aimed at the digital infrastructure sector, spanning electrical engineering, physical computing and cloud operations. A mini data centre lab and other hands-on experiences are intended to show learners the technology and careers behind digital services.

Community Investment

Microsoft said the hub delivers on its Data Centre Community Pledge. Since 2018, the company has invested over €6.5 million in Irish communities near its current and future data centre operations, supporting programmes that it says have directly benefited more than 135,000 people.

The €1m investment comes from a €4m fund Microsoft set aside in March last year to help Skill Up Ireland for the era of AI. The hub is intended to work alongside Microsoft Ireland's other skilling initiatives, such as the Collinstown Data Centre Academy, to raise awareness of pathways into further education, apprenticeships and technology careers.

Opening and Outlook

Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith joined students, teachers and community representatives for the official opening. Lavinia Morris, General Manager of Microsoft's EMEA Data Centre Operations, said more than 5,000 students and teachers from nearby communities are expected to use the hub over the next year. The participation figure remains a forecast.
