THE ESSENTIALS

What you need to know

Spotify has launched a native in-car app that runs directly on Audi infotainment systems, starting October 21 across several Audi models. It removes the need for phone pairing or Bluetooth, offering hands-free voice control, restricted video while moving, and full-screen video and lyrics when parked.

  • The app debuts in the A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A5, Q5 and A6, with the Q7 and Q9 to follow at market launch.
  • Playback is built into the vehicle's screens, sound system and voice controls, without cables or Bluetooth pairing.
  • Moving vehicles restrict video and lyrics, while parked cars and EV charging sessions allow full-screen video and real-time lyrics.

Built for the dashboard

Spotify says its new app is native to the vehicle's infotainment system rather than relying on phone projection, which it says has shaped in-car audio until now. Listeners sign in once and playback is ready when the car starts, with no cable or Bluetooth connection needed for playback.

Drivers can manage playback hands-free through the vehicle's native voice controls or Spotify's DJ feature. Front passengers on supported vehicles can use secondary displays to browse, read lyrics or watch video, and can scan an on-screen QR code to join an in-car Spotify Jam and add songs from their phones.

Safety mode and availability

While the vehicle is moving, the centre display limits video and lyrics to keep the driver focused, prioritising voice controls and simpler navigation. When parked, including during EV charging, the main display opens up to full-screen video podcasts, music videos and real-time lyrics.

The app is available from October 21 through the Audi Application Store for both Free and Premium listeners in the all-new electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, as well as the A5, Q5 and A6. Audi's upcoming Q7 and Q9 SUVs will follow at their market launches, and availability may vary by vehicle and market.

Expansion plans

Audi is the first automaker to launch the native app. Spotify says it plans to extend the experience to additional global automotive partners over the coming year, describing the Audi launch as a starting point rather than a one-off.

Do I need to pair my phone to use Spotify in a supported Audi?

No. A phone is used only to sign in, by scanning an on-screen QR code or entering a code at spotify.com/pair. Playback does not require pairing or tethering the phone to the car, though an Audi connect package may be required.
