How the calculator works

The Treasury's Debt to the Penny dataset reports total public debt outstanding, debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings for each business day, usually with a one-day lag. The calculator divides the figure for the chosen day by the US resident population from the Census Bureau's population clock and multiplies by the number of people you enter.

Weekends and federal holidays have no figure, so the calculator uses the last reported day before the chosen date. Shares for earlier dates use today's population, which makes changes over time easy to compare. A per-person share is a way to put the total in perspective; it is not a bill, and federal debt is repaid from future government revenue rather than by individuals.

Treasury figures are refreshed each business day. Amounts are in nominal US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation.
