About the data
The figures come from the US Treasury’s Debt to the Penny dataset, published by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service for each business day. Total public debt outstanding is the sum of debt held by the public, such as Treasury bills, notes and bonds owned by investors, and intragovernmental holdings, mainly trust funds such as Social Security.
Treasury reports the figures with a lag of about one business day, and there are no entries for weekends or federal holidays. Daily moves can be large around auctions, tax dates and debt-limit events, so longer comparisons give a clearer picture of the trend.
This page reflects the latest Treasury release and is refreshed daily. Changes and daily averages are calculated by LedgerWire from the official figures; the chart starts in January 2020.
