What you need to know

The IEA Governing Board said members will accelerate the roughly 100 million barrels of emergency oil still to be delivered under the March collective action, including more than 20 million barrels of diesel. It said total releases will exceed the original 400-million-barrel pledge and described oil markets, especially diesel, as tight.

  • About 330 million barrels had been released, with roughly 100 million barrels still to be delivered as of 15 October 2026.
  • Total releases are expected to exceed the original 400-million-barrel commitment as some members exceed their pledges.
  • The board described oil markets as tight, particularly for diesel, and urged unhindered energy trade.

Remaining volumes to be completed faster

The IEA Governing Board reaffirmed the March collective action taken in response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. As of 15 October 2026, around 330 million barrels had been released, with approximately 100 million barrels still to be delivered.

Members will complete the remaining releases according to national circumstances and accelerate the outstanding volumes. The board said some members had already exceeded their original pledges and others intended to, so total releases would surpass the original 400-million-barrel commitment.

Diesel focus and tight market assessment

The board said more than 20 million barrels of diesel would be released as soon as possible. Its assessment described oil markets as tight, particularly for diesel.

Members with crude-production or refining capacity were encouraged to increase supply. The board also stressed the importance of unhindered energy trade. The IEA Secretariat will continue monitoring deliveries and update the board and G7 leaders.

The figures reflect the programme as of the release date. The announcement does not establish that the remaining volumes have already reached the market.
