Outlook highlights electrification and gaps

IRENA's new World Energy Transition Outlook 2026 identifies additional transformation needed to return to a 1.5°C-compatible pathway after the current overshoot in carbon emissions. The report provides a framework for member states to assess progress and identify implementation gaps. A central finding is the growing strategic role of renewables-based electrification. The source notes that renewable deployment continues to reach record levels and technology costs have declined, but implementation pace remains insufficient while electricity demand grows rapidly and efficiency and enabling infrastructure lag.

Institutional and strategic discussions

The Council is also addressing implementation of the 2026-2027 Work Programme and Budget, the Medium-term Strategy 2028–2032, and the director-general selection process. The Council is expected to recommend candidates for final selection by the IRENA Assembly in 2027.
